Before Rome. Before Gladiator. The most controversial film of all time as you've never experienced it before! Combining lavish spectacle and top award-winning stars, this landmark production was shrouded in secrecy since its first day of filming. Now, this unprecedented special edition presents a bolder and more revealing Caligula than ever before, with a beautiful new high-definition transfer from recently uncovered negative elements and hours of never-before-seen bonus material! From the moment he ascends to the throne as Emperor, Caligula enforces a reign like no other as power and corruption transform him into a deranged beast whose deeds still live on as some of the most depraved in history. -HM.com

I just purchased this special edition here at HM.com, terrific film. I had not seen it for a long time. I first rented it when I was twelve, yeah my local video store was pretty lax, and was obviously shocked by what I'd seen and was probably warped for life. The mash potatoes, fisting scene still makes me feel funny to this day, and allways remind me of my days at summer camp for some reason.
The dvd extras on this disc are well done, great commentary from McDowell too, who I had read was very angry about this film and the sex scenes that had been added post production, turns out that was Peter O'Toole and John Gielgud who were pissy. On an interesting note Jack Nicholson was reported to have been aggresively sought by Tinto Brass to play the title role but the actor apparently turned down the role, which is too bad because I could see this film being far better with him instead of McDowell.

The killing machine scene was on the blue-box extras.
I can't think of this movie without remembering how hot Teresa Ann Savoy was(see Salon Kitty). Unfortunately, this film killed(or dampened) many a career, and Savoy was never really heard from again. Only Gielgud and Brass seemed to have come out unscathed.
The big feud on this pic was between Producer Bob Guccione(Penthouse publisher fame) and Brass. Brass intended the sex in this epic to be depraved and unappetizing(somewhat like some of the scenes in Kitty). When Guccione saw the rushes on this over budget epic, he freaked, and wanted to fire Brass. He shot and clumsily inserted 12 minutes of porn scenes to sexy it up, including the lesbian scene between Annika de Lorenzo(who later tried to sue Guccione, after finding she'd been misled about the inclusion of explicit scenes) and Lori Wagner, and the final orgy scene. Brass threatened to have his name removed from the film(as did McDowell and O'Toole). Fortunately, this was Guccione's last attempt at major film production, but Brass has gone on to much BIGGER things, if you know what I mean.
This belongs in exploitation, BTW. _________________
